“Adolescence is a transition from the child who has to live in a family, to the adult who has to live in society.”

–Maria Montessori

The Erdkinder Middle School Program provides an innovative land-based educational program in which adolescents can excel as individuals, engage in meaningful work, acquire leadership skills, and learn to care for themselves, their peers, the environment, and their community.

Montessori philosophy views adolescence as a period of great transformation and extraordinary potential. The primary mission of the adolescent program is to serve the vital needs of adolescents through work that challenges both the mind and the body. This is carried out through a supportive teaching staff that creates a prepared learning environment that empowers adolescents to set and exceed their own goals, to engage in real community experience and meaningful, noble work; all of these contributing to their sense of purpose and worth.

Hilton Montessori Erdkinder Adolescent Program provides:

  • Individualized instruction- small classes.
  • Logically integrated, challenging and rich curriculum.
  • Development of life and learning skills: self-direction, critical thinking, time-management, collaboration, and personal responsibility.
  • Development of community: respect, responsibility, democratic problem-solving and inter-dependence.
  • Development of critical/ divergent thinking and creativity.
  • Integration of technology.
  • A learning environment that helps adolescents to discover their capabilities through meaningful work and real-life problem solving.

Our Vision

We cultivate a love of learning while guiding the child’s developmental growth.  Each child’s unique potential is nurtured in an environment of love, respect and activity.

Our Mission

We undertake to develop a plan of study that generates just-right challenges for students to grow their intelligence. Students should discover, master, create and innovate the learning plan in a safe, supportive environment conducive to change. Adolescents should feel able to respond to real-world problems and hold the belief that they can conquer all challenges in their future. We aim for each child to develop his/her character to become a moral, self-assured and independent person by building meaningful relationships between peers and adults.

“All the work during this period will shift the plea of the child… from ‘Help me to do it myself’ to the plea of the adolescent, ‘Help me to think for myself’”.
Dr Maria Montessori

Why Montessori

The Montessori Method of teaching aims for the fullest possible development of the whole child, physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. This ultimately prepares them for life’s many rich experiences and challenges.

Montessori develops the true potential of each individual child. Our children are given freedom within limits and support to question, explore and make connections. Montessori children become confident, enthusiastic & self-directed learners. They can think critically, work collaboratively, be creative, build resilience and act boldly – vital skills and grounding for the 21st century.

The Environment

During this period of personal growth, remarkable change and great social development, adolescents move away from working with the Montessori materials and are comfortable with reading, discussion and working to task. This is an age of critical thinking, questioning, evaluation, re-evaluation, self-assessment and self-concern. The adolescent wants to use knowledge to DO something that matters in the world.

The Hilton Montessori Erdkinder Programme is in a green area with space for contemplation and play. Work is done in the house or craft workshop. Indoor and outdoor areas allow children to work individually or in groups. There is supervised play time to explore the area. Classes are multi-aged to support the developmental needs of the adolescent. Their workday has a long lunch break to relax, make food, eat and socialise.
